First go at Literacy Centers

Monday was our first time at Literacy Centers.  The kids did a great job.  These centers will continue throughout the year and during this time, starting next week, Reading Groups will meet with me.

This particular week, there are six centers and the students are in groups of two, three or four.  They will rotate through the six centers over six days.  During this initial set of Literacy Centers the kids are working on writing their names using only one capital letter and the rest lower case letters, making a book similar to Chick Chicka Boom Boom which reviews concepts of print and fine motor skills, sorting capital and lower cases letters which also develop fine motor skills, listening to Froggy Rides a Bike and writing a review, completing several tasks on Starfall about particular letters, sorting letters from numbers and finally, as an extra center for those who finish early, attaching some letters to our classroom coconut tree and recording their creations.

Our next set of Literacy Centers begins next Wednesday.  There will be different activities, books, skills, tasks and groupings throughout the year.

Celebration for 30 Soaring with Pride Stickers

I want to start by thanking you for all of the generous donations, both of time working on preparations at home and items from the apples, to our classroom. We are SO LUCKY to have all these items and efforts!  Thank you, thank you!  Notes are finally complete and will be in your son/daughter's blue folder on Monday.

We had a great day on Thursday.  We had earned our 30th Soaring with Pride sticker on Wednesday and so enjoyed celebrating throughout the day.  In addition, we earned FIVE more stickers on Thursday so we are off to a great start for our next 30!

The kids had their first Weather Drill on Thursday morning and were amazing.  So quiet and well behaved.  I was very proud of them.  We came back in the room and celebrated with two of our favorite songs!  I wish I thought to break out my camera.  These kids have got some moves!

Our fourth Phonics lesson went very well and the kids are doing a terrific job adjusting to this new routine of instruction, questioning and answering and then written practice.  Thank you for taking the time to review these papers with them as they come home throughout the year in the red folders.

We had an EXTRA recess in the morning on Thursday.  Wahoo!  At lunchtime, the kids were treated to "Music Friday" as I could hear "Call Me Maybe" blasting down the hallway ;)

In Writing, we practiced our "Turn and Talk" technique and the kids shared the books that they had written.  Listeners were instructed to ask two questions and then offer one idea.  What great conversations I observed!  They then went to their tables to put the finishing touches on their books.  This was a four-day process and I am proud of them for working so hard.

Mrs. Fike came to our class to give us a lesson about her role in the school and about being a good helper.  This lesson is a great follow-up to our Social Studies lesson two weeks ago about being a "Handy Helper."

After Mrs. Fike's visit, we had GAME DAY for our Math lesson.  I finally thought to get out my camera!  Loads of fun!

We had POPCORN for our Celebration Snack after Art with Mrs. Burford.  We had some classmates share special books while we ate ;)
We then started our first day of Application Centers Round 2. Looks like everyone enjoyed themselves and a special shout-out goes to Cody's grandmother who MADE us three clumps of PLAY-DOUGH!

I'm off to the first of five games today... one is mine (tennis match) so at least I can get some exercise in between all the bleacher sitting!  Have a great weekend!

Writing time

Author/Illustrators hard at work! The KINDERAUTHORS are working on their books :)
(This was Monday, September 15)

Buddies!

Our third-grade Buddies visited us today!  It was great :)
The third-graders read books to the kindergarteners and then.... drum roll please... the KINDERAUTHORS shared the books that they have WRITTEN over the past four days with their captive audience, their third-grade Buddies.  It was wonderful.  I am so proud of them.
Here's to a great year full of activities and fun times with our Buddies.

The gang's all here!

Here are the shots that I got on Thursday, August 28.  This was the first day that the entire class attended together.

The gang's all here!

Third week of Kinder

Our third week of Kindergarten was very productive.  Our morning routine is starting to gel.  We made "Gimmie Five" hands to remind ourselves of the five essential steps the students need to make when they arrive in the classroom.  These are setting lunches on the bookcase in the hallway, checking and putting blue folders in the bin, hanging up backpacks, putting the Attendance Apple in the basket and finally, choosing an Application Center for that afternoon.  We also check with ourselves about the need for a drink of water or a trip to the restroom ;)

As the children finish their morning routine, they are to play quietly on the Rainbow Rug.  Each week, I set out a different set of activities or manipulatives for the children to explore.  This past week, the children enjoyed 15 wooden puzzles and I was proud at the way they shared, worked together and then cleaned up when I rang the bell.  Announcements begin just after the 8:55 am bell and we are ready and attentive for them each morning!

We continued learning about our classmates by interviewing five more who were each the Student of the Day this week.  The kids are asking great interview questions and are learning how to be good listeners as our speakers respond to those questions.  We also made a book for each of these students for them to keep at home.  If you son/daughter has not been been selected as the Student of the Day, "maybe next time!"

In order to practice the importance of labeling our drawings, the kids got to label me!  I was quite the sight with post-its stuck all over... yes, eyeballs was one child's suggestion and while I did write it down, I explained that I couldn't actually stick it on my eyeball.  We also labeled a poster and the kids labeled their paper (you probably saw it in their blue folder on Monday).  This is a skill that is essential to our Writing Curriculum so it was a great way for the kids to really see what and how to label.  Lots of giggles! They drew and labeled their face, drew something that was hard for them and labeled it, wrote a letter to you and made a book this week... we have very busy writers in Kindergarten!

Stan Straight and Curly Carla helped us to think about the formation of letters.  We sorted magnetic letters on the white board from our Book Nook, cut, sorted and glued letters at our seats all while learning to use the recycle bin and then, on Wednesday, we sorted the letters in our own names (which are hanging in the hallway for the entire school to admire).

Another focus this week was looking at Concepts of Print.  These include the title page, the author and illustrator, how to handle books, letters, words, pictures, turning pages, the direction of sentences, one to one correspondence using our finger on words, "turn and sweep," and the back cover.  We read If You Take a Mouse to School and had a lot of fun imagining what we would show Mouse if he came to our classroom! We also practiced, with both a large poster and smaller sentence strips, "reading" from left to right.  Each student bravely came to the magnetic easel and used the wand to lead the class "reading" the shapes across the page.  The next day, we "read" the sentence strips with a partner on the carpet.  We also used this opportunity to learn how to pass materials around the circle and use then one partner-pair at a time (we had twelve sentence strips and they went all around our circle).

To practice our letter recognition as well as good sportsmanship, we played a game called "Uh-Oh!" on Friday.  I modeled a bad sport's reaction to getting the Uh-Oh card and the class had a good laugh at my routine.  They then went on to play the game in small groups of about five students and did a fantastic job working together, having fun and being good sports when the Uh-Oh card showed up (Star Student stickers didn't hurt either!).

Our Social Studies lessons this week focused on taking care of things both at school and at home.  Thank you parents for helping your kids choose an item to share with their classmates.  We had a great day on Thursday sharing with one another on the carpet and then browsing the items on display in the classroom.  I think we had about 85% follow the "no-touching" rule!  Not bad for the first time!

Our visit to the Media Center went very well.  Everyone returned last week's book and so everyone was able to check out a new book.  Remember, we visit the Media Center on Wednesdays.  We also got to have our first experience in the computer lab this week!  The kids really enjoyed themselves.  We worked with Pixie and the kids explored writing their names, painting pictures, stamping and erasing.  Mrs. Marcel, our school IT, was a great help to us there.

Math is a wonderful time of day.  The kids continued their Number of the Day pages in their journals, they practiced our Math Rotation routine, built numbers, sorted buttons, played a dice game with a partner, counted students, wrote out numbers to 10 on whiteboards and created chains of various numbers of links.

The kids are loving Specials!  We are so lucky to have such wonderful P.E., Music and Art teachers at UES.  The kids are all smiles when I come to retrieve them from their Specials classes.  Of course, the fact that snack time and Center time is next doesn't hurt either ;)

We do not have school this coming Friday which means we will miss computer lab time this week.  Not to worry though, we have a lot of fun activities planned... including our first visit with our third-grade Buddies.  This will be a great time on Tuesday afternoon!  All of the classes at UES are paired with other classes and we get together approximately once a month to enjoy activities together.  I am looking forward to Tuesday and having the Kinders meet their special friends in third grade!

Have a great Sunday and I will see those incredible Kinders on Monday!

Welcome to my first blog entry!  Please be patient as I navigate this new world ;)
I am looking forward to being able to communicate with my students' families about our experiences in kindergarten on this blog.

We had another terrific week in Kindergarten.  The kids are getting used to our routines and procedures as well as the length of the day.  They are really warming up to one another and making friends quickly.  We have been working hard to earn Soaring with Pride stickers and, as a class, have earned 15 thus far!  We are working toward a "school treat" once we earn 30.  The kids are also enjoying earning Star Student stickers and filling out slips for a drawing each Friday morning on the school-wide announcements.  We actually had a winner in our class yesterday!  It can be difficult when a child doesn't win, but "maybe next time!"

Speaking of taking turns, we have started our Student of the Day routine.  Each day, a new Student of the Day is revealed and we are able to interview that student to learn more about him/her.  The SOTD is also the Line Leader that particular day.  We have had six students selected so far... "someone has to be first, someone has to be in the middle and someone will have to be the last SOTD."  The kids are enjoying interviewing their classmates and have asked some really great questions!  We also all write the SOTD's name and draw a picture of him/her in order to make a book for the SOTD to take home.

Our morning routine includes unpacking our backpacks and checking the blue folders.  Thank you for taking out the papers on the "Keep At Home" side and returning anything that is in the "Return to School" side.

Language Arts has been a joy to teach this past week.  The kids are working on recognizing the structure of sentences, directionality, spacing and punctuation.  We have added three words to our Word Wall, "I," "am" and "see."  Ask your child if he/she can sing to a sight word song!  :)  We also made an awesome poster entitled "I am."  Everyone was able to contribute a complete sentence... and wait until you see the poster... we have a lot of NFL fans in our class!

We are learning about how to be good readers and how to build our stamina reading independently.  I am SO impressed with their stamina practice... they can "read" quietly and independently for three minutes.  We have also learned and practiced the "Turn and Talk" procedure.  I heard such great comments from the kids when they were sharing details about their independent reading books with their partners on Wednesday.  "I think that..., " "I wonder if...." and "I see..." all while pointing to images in the books.  These are all phrases that we are practicing to use in order to be critical and thoughtful readers.

In Writing, the kids are using their Writing Journals to illustrate and label their mental images.  They finished their SIXTH entry yesterday.  Can you believe it?  We have done literary responses (for example, after reading Miss Bindergarten, they wrote about what they did to get ready for kindergarten), informational writing (teaching another something that the author knows well), revising/adding details to a previous entry ("when you are done, you have only just begun") and developing a topic themselves.

Our first Social Studies unit focuses on learning about oneself and others, rules, being a helper and ways to exhibit self-control.  You have some great helpers at home!  I have heard all about how your children fold the laundry, clean the dishes, take a nap and watch their siblings!  ;)

In Math, we are learning about the tools we will use this year, the procedures for Math Rotations and sharing materials, using models, measuring with precision (ask them about the "messed up" playdough), looking at things in multiple ways (ask them about the Duck/Rabbit cloud) as well as counting with one-to-one correspondence and representing numbers with illustrated models.  We have completed four pages of our Math Journals thus far.

We go to Specials everyday at 2:00 pm and the kids are enjoying themselves with Mrs. Schmidt and Mr. Wiles, Mrs. Burford and Mr. Grimm.  At 2:45 pm we return to the classroom (except for Mondays) and have a snack.  Once the kids are finished and have thrown away their trash, they begin their time at their Application Center.  For now, I am rotating everyone through the Center stations so that they can have time in each spot.  The kids are really enjoying themselves and I have some great pictures to share!  Once every group has been around the circuit, I will put out new materials at the various Centers and we will mix up our groups to go around again.

I will post pictures from our first two weeks of school as soon as I have permission slips.

Have a great weekend,
Shannon Vetter
